Llucmajor

In the heart of the marina de Llucmajor (Mallorca) is the Son Mut Nou farm, the largest fig treesexperimentation field in the world.

Montserrat Pons and Boscana, a pharmascist from Llucmajor, has built a unique experience around the fig trees. Ideal to visit as a family, in a group or simply with your partner.

Montserrat Pons has designed and developed, from the miner fig tree shoots provided by his friend Pep Sacarés and Mulet, the project to build an experimental field fot the cultivation of the fig tree, in order to contribute to the study and scientific knowledge of the tree and its fruits.

In son Mut Nou, in the heart of the Majorcan migjorn, we find thousands or lush, slenders fig trees, of hundred of varieties, coming from all coners of the Balearic Islands, peninsular, from exotic and distant countries.

The field of experimentation is divided into five sectors, with a number of 1,724 fig trees, out of a total of 834 diferente varieties:255 of all the Balearic Islands; 187, from other parts of the spanish state, and 392 foreigner, fro all over the world.

The aims of the Son Mut Nou experimental field are:

-Concentrate a collection of fig cultivars of diferent varieties (heritage of the Balearic Island

-Recover olf varieties at risks of genetic erosion,

-Discover unknown varieties.

Normally the fig tree are fallow all year around. We usually do two shallow cultivations per year so as not to damage the superficial roots and we give the passes of cultivators that are necessary, with the righ seasoning, to bury the fertilizer, destroy the herbs, minimize the evaporation of the water and break up the compcted soil.

For the subscriber we use organic fertilizer (anima manure)

In the case of the plantation of the fig trees in Son Mut Nou, we used a plating frame of 13×13 m, with a capacity of 64 tress per hectare, thus obtaining crops of abou 4´4 to 5’ 7 tons of figs per hectare.

The fig tree is used mainly as a fruit tree, either to consume fresh figs ot to dry them, and to feed the live stock, as last resort.

Currently the elaboration of products derived form figs is a priority to be able to contribute to the maintenance of the field.
