Pere Sastre Obrador, “Pere de Son Gall” (1895–1965)

Self-taught inventor who dreamed of flying

Affectionately known as Pere de Son Gall, Pere Sastre Obrador was a resident of Llucmajor with the soul of an inventor. In 1921, he designed and built a prototype helicopter on his rural estate, anticipating modern aeronautical developments.

Although his device never flew effectively, his initiative caused great excitement at the time and was reported in the island press. It became a symbol of Mallorcan creativity and perseverance.

Today, its name gives life to streets, centers, and local entities, as a tribute to someone who represented the boldness of independent thought in an agricultural Mallorca of the early 20th century.
