Sant Antoni

The January celebrations for the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, popularly known as Sant Antoni dels porcs (Saint Anthony of the pigs), protector of animals and crops, are deeply rooted in the villages of the island due to their agricultural and livestock past. He was also the former patron saint of many guilds and trades.

January 17th is a public holiday in many towns across Mallorca. In Llucmajor it is not an official holiday, but it is nevertheless celebrated on nearby dates, usually on the weekend, to allow for the foguerons (bonfires) and other traditional events such as the correfocs (fire runs) with the dimonis (devils) and the blessing of animals at the parish church.
