Son Mut Nou: The World’s Largest Fig Tree Experimental Field in Llucmajor

In the heart of the Marina de Llucmajor (Mallorca) is the Son Mut Nou estate, the largest Fig Tree Experimentation Field in the world.

Montserrat Pons y Boscana, a pharmacist from Llucmajor, has built a unique experience around fig trees. Ideal to visit with the family, in a group or simply with your partner.

Montserrat Pons has designed and developed, from the Miner fig tree shoots provided by her friend Pep Sacarés y Mulet, the project to build an experimental fig tree cultivation field, in order to contribute to the study and scientific knowledge of the tree and its fruit.

In Son Mut Nou, in the heart of Mallorca’s Migjorn, we find thousands of luxuriant, slender fig trees, of hundreds of varieties, from all corners of the Balearic Islands, from mainland Spain, from exotic and distant countries.

The experimental field is divided into five sectors, with a number of 1,724 fig trees, of a total of 834 different varieties: 255 from all the Balearic Islands, 187 from other parts of Spain, and 392 foreign ones from all over the world.

The aims of the Son Mut Nou experimental field are:
– To concentrate a collection of fig cultivars of different varieties (heritage of the Balearic Islands),
– To recover old varieties at risk of genetic erosion,
– To discover unknown varieties.

THE PLANTING PROCESS
1. Choosing a branch
2. Choosing the bud

4. Tying the cutting

Normally fig trees lie fallow all year round. We usually make two shallow ploughings per year so as not to damage the surface roots and we make the necessary cultivator passes, with the appropriate seasoning, to bury the compost, destroy the weeds, minimise water evaporation and break up the compacted soil.

For fertilisation we use organic fertiliser (animal manure).

In the case of the fig tree plantation in Son Mut Nou, we use a planting frame of 13 x 13 m, with a capacity of 64 trees per hectare, thus obtaining harvests of 4.4 to 5.7 tons of figs per hectare.

The fig tree is mainly used as a fruit tree, either to eat the figs fresh or to dry them, and for livestock feed, in the latter case.

Nowadays, the production of products derived from figs is a priority in order to contribute to the maintenance of the countryside.
