SPA Cap Enderrocat – Cap Blanc

The Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) Cap Enderrocat – Cap Blanc is located in the southern part of Mallorca, within the municipality of Llucmajor. It was designated in 2006 as a site of community interest under the Natura 2000 Network, covering approximately 7,100 hectares.

The area stands out for its unique geological formation, with a vast limestone platform and coastal cliffs that serve as refuge for numerous species. The climate is typically semi-arid Mediterranean, with low rainfall and mild temperatures.

From an ecological perspective, the SPA hosts a wide variety of habitats—13 of which are protected under the Habitats Directive—and a flora rich in endemic species. It is a key zone for the conservation of seabirds and birds of prey, such as:

  • The Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), endemic and critically endangered.

  • The Mediterranean shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii), nesting on the cliffs.

  • The Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii), frequent in nearby coastal areas.

The SPA also serves as a vital ecological corridor for migratory birds and provides habitat for steppe species and traditional agricultural landscapes. In recent years, the protected area has been extended to include parts of the Llucmajor countryside, which are important for the reproduction and settlement of threatened species.

This natural enclave exemplifies Mallorca’s ecological wealth and the ongoing efforts to balance human activity with biodiversity conservation.
