The Bed of Our Lady

On August 15th, a national holiday, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is celebrated. In Mallorca, this feast is popularly known as La Mare de Déu d’agost. The celebration has been documented since the 13th century, after the conquest of Mallorca by King James I. Devotion to this festivity increased significantly from the 14th century onwards. Today, the tradition continues with an eight-day period during which a catafalque is set up holding a recumbent image of the Virgin Mary, representing her passage to Heaven. These temporary installations, very characteristic of the Baroque period, are known as llits de la Mare de Déu. Occasionally, a contemporary artist has been invited to contribute complementary elements to the staging. In Llucmajor, they are installed in the churches of Sant Miquel and Sant Bonaventura.
