The s’Arenal train 1916–1964

For railway enthusiasts, there are significant remains of the railway line that linked Palma with Santanyí, with stations in s’Arenal and Llucmajor, in and around s’Arenal.

The line was inaugurated in 1916 and remained in service until 1964. Various management problems and the rise of road transport led to its closure and dismantling.

Among other architectural elements, the bridge over the Torrent dels Jueus and the Les Set Boques bridge on the outskirts of the town have been preserved. The trace of the track that crossed s’Arenal remains in the form of pedestrian passages in the town center. The station was demolished and its site converted into a public square, now known as Plaça de l’Estació. The rest of the land on which the track ran was put up for sale and returned to the owners of the estates through which it passed.

There are two initiatives related to the railway and the municipality of Llucmajor on the part of the institutions. On the one hand, the Consell de Mallorca has begun the process of converting the old railway line into a greenway, a hiking and cycling route between s’Arenal and Llucmajor, covering a distance of about 9 km. On the other hand, the Government of the Balearic Islands has already planned a new railway line that will link Palma, s’Arenal, and Llucmajor, meaning that the train will return to these towns by 2032.
