Torres de Defensa

The large area and length of the Llucmajor coastline made it essential to build defensive and warning structures. These towers were mainly erected in the 16th century, when Mallorca was under threat from constant Muslim incursions. They sent warnings and signals using fire at night and smoke during the day when the watchmen or torrers spotted enemy ships.

Among them, the best known and in very good condition are:

Torre de S’Estalella, built by master builder Simó Carrió in 1577. The tower is cylindrical in the upper half and conical in the lower half. It is 9.2 m high and has a diameter of 7.64 m at the base. It was restored by the Llucmajor Town Council in 1984.

Cala Pi Tower, built by master builder Joan Pons and completed in 1663. The tower is cylindrical in the upper half and truncated conical in the lower half. It is built of stones joined with mortar. It is 10.2 m high and has a diameter of 9.95 m at the base. In 1970, the tower was restored by its owners in accordance with the project drawn up in 1967 by architect Antoni Alomar.

Cap Blanc Tower and Cap Enderrocat Tower, both built in 1579 by Antoni Genovard, a stonemason from Sineu (Mallorca). The former is almost entirely preserved, while only the base of the latter remains.
