ZEPA Cap Enderrocat

The Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) Cap Enderrocat – Cap Blanc is located in the south of the island of Mallorca, within the municipality of Llucmajor. It was designated in 2006 as a Site of Community Interest within the Natura 2000 Network, covering approximately 7,100 hectares.

The area stands out for its geological uniqueness, featuring an extensive limestone platform and coastal cliffs that provide shelter for numerous species. The climate is typically semi-arid Mediterranean, with low rainfall and mild temperatures.

From an ecological perspective, the SPA hosts a great diversity of habitats —13 of them protected under the Habitats Directive— and a flora rich in endemic species. Moreover, it is a key area for the conservation of seabirds and raptors, including:

  • The Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), an endemic and critically endangered species.

  • The Mediterranean shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii), which nests on the cliffs.

  • Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii), present in coastal areas.

The SPA also serves an essential role as an ecological corridor for migratory birds and as a habitat for steppe and traditional farmland birds. In recent years, efforts have been made to extend the protected area to include parts of the Llucmajor coastline, important for the breeding and juvenile settlement of threatened species.

This enclave represents a key example of Mallorca’s natural wealth and the ongoing efforts to preserve the balance between human development and biodiversity conservation.
