Serra de Galdent: a walk among caves and rural views

Llucmajor – Camí de Son Mendívil – Camí Vell d’Algaida – Camí de Ses Pedreres – Restaurante Galdent – Camí de Galdent – Llucmajor
Duration: 1 h 45 min – 6.7 km – Easy, with gentle ascents and descents

This is a circular walk that starts in Llucmajor heading north, towards the rocky and rugged Serra de Galdent. It passes by the famous Restaurante Galdent – unique and surprising, as it is located inside the grounds of a huge cave – and then descends again via rural paths back to Llucmajor, finishing at the same starting point. Along this route, from the path that borders the mountain range, you’ll enjoy impressive panoramic views that stretch from the town of Llucmajor and its surroundings all the way to the coast. As a note, this walk is particularly spectacular when the almond trees are in bloom in February.

The walk begins at the Plaça Fra Jeroni Boscana (on the road towards Algaida), where there is an old windmill without blades in the centre of the roundabout. Facing the mountains, head to the left to follow the Camí de Son Mendívil, signposted with “Restaurante Galdent”. This takes us out of the town towards the hills. Here the paved road is wide, flanked by mulberry trees and wild fennel.

We’ll pass Camí del Comellar at 20 min and shortly after, Camí de Son Conill, both on the left. Continuing along the main road, we’ll reach the Caminal de Galdent on the right at 30 min; this is where the shorter version of the route turns right onto a narrower dirt path, passing a few somewhat abandoned estates and an old well, reconnecting with the main route just before returning to Llucmajor.

The main route continues about a hundred metres further and then turns right to follow the Camí Vell d’Algaida, also signposted with “Restaurante Galdent”. Here we begin a gentle climb towards the range, and we’ll notice that vehicles are now few and far between. At 40 min, we’ll turn right again to follow the Camí de Ses Pedreres, a narrower path that continues to climb gently towards the rocky Serra de Galdent, now very close.

To return to Llucmajor, we continue along this path, which shortly after bends to the right and then to the left, descending gently with open fields on either side. Following the main route, we’ll gradually get closer to Llucmajor. We’ll pass Camí de Ferrutxelles (Excursion No. 5) on the left at 1 h 20 min, and a little later we’ll pass the other end of the Caminal de Galdent (1 h 30 min), where the shorter version of the walk rejoins the main route. Shortly after, we’ll pass the large cemetery of Llucmajor, with its spacious car park. The road widens significantly here, and within a few more minutes we’ll be back in Llucmajor at the starting point after a 1 h 45 min, 6.7 km walk.
